Idaho Pioneer Who Has 50 Grand and 13 Great Grand Children

Alexander Womack who with his son, grandson, and great grandson, were photographed for the Stateman's pioneer column, is an old timers who has seen lively times in the early days, having participated in the Bannock Indian was as well as being a veteran in the Civil War. He has made his home near Emmett for the last 30 years and gives an interesting account of the naming of that town.

Mr. Womack was born in Shelby County, Ill. March 26, 1836. With his parents he moved to Missouri when yet a child. In 1855 he was married. He lived in Missouri till the spring of 1870 when he moved to Idaho, locating in the Payette valley about two miles above where the present town of Emmett is now located. At that time there was a very small settlement in that section. After living on his homestead for over a year Mr. Womack moved to Emmett building the second house in that vicinity and residing here continuously wvwer since. He enjoys the distinction of being the oldest settler now residing in the town.

For several years after moving to Idaho Indians were more plentiful that whites not always being on the most friendly terms. At one time in particular, during the Bannock war, the few settlers were in fear of an attack for some time.

Mr. Womack engaged in the blacksmith work soon after moving here and conducted a shop for over 30 years, when the business was taken over by one of his sons who still conducts it. He is a veteran of the civil war, was in the Forty-fifth Illinois infantry and saw three years services, most of the time in the army of the Tennessee. He is an interesting talker and well posted on the early history of Idaho and especially of this section of the state.

Mr. Womack gives the origin of the name of the town of Emmett from the establishment of a postoffice by that name on what was known as the old Payette ranch, six miles below the town. Thomas Cahalan established the postoffice at this ranch, naming it in honor of his son, Emmett, about the year 1884. The office at the ranch was discontnued and moved to Emmett, retaining the name ever since.

Mr. Womack is the father of 15 children, 12 of whom are still living. In the family were nine girls and six boys. There are now living over 50 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Mr. Womack is 69 years of age, hale and hearty, exceppt for a slight rheumatic trouble the las few years. He is wonderfully well preserved for a man of his years and could easily pass for a man of 60.

The accompanying picture shows the four generations all living, they are: Alexander Womack, Isaac Womack, his son. Walter Womack, and Elmer Womack. A family reunion was held a short time ago at which there were about 75 descendants present.

Emmett Loses Loved Pioneer Alexander S. Womack, Indian Fighter of Early Days, Passes Away (News Article) Date: 1916-12-03; Paper: The Idaho Daily Statesman

Alexander Selkirk Womack, one of the beloved pioneers of Emmett, died in the city November 19, in his eighty-first year. Mr. Womack, who came to the Emmett country 45 years ago, saw the first school building erected, the first church organized, the first irrigation ditch dug, and from that time on watched the sage brush plains blossom into beautiful, cultivated fields.
He was born in Springfield, Ill., March 26, 1836, and was married to Pheobe A. Perkins, May 13, 1855.

Mr. Womack heard the call of the west in 1860 and he crossed the plains from Missouri to Denver, then a mining town one year old, where he remained until the beginning of the civil war.
Fought Through Civil War.

When calls for volunteers were made, his intense patriotism caused him to return to the east and in 1863 he enlisted in the Forty-fifth Illinois infantry, where he served until the close of the war. After the war was over Mr Womack again decided to cast his lot in the west and with his family started for his new home in 1871.

On November 19, just 45 years prior to the day of his death, the family arrived at what is now the McConnell brothers' ranch on Anderson creek, then the home of "Uncle Ab" and "Aunt Polly" Wells, who will be remembered by all old settlers along the Payette valley.

At this time, Mr. Womack's brother Asa Womack, now living at Tikura Ia., had a blacksmith on the Payette river at the Dr. Haley place. Both families moved to Emmett and the brothers opened a shop there, the first in the place.

Organized Against Indians.

Soon after settlers began coming to this valley the Bannock Indian war started, then the local Indians became hositle and the Payette valley was among many other fronier localities that suffered from the numerous depredations of the painted red men.

Mr. Womack, with 60 or 70 other settlers, formed a company under Captain Page, now of Weiser. Guns and ammunition were obtained from the government and a stockade was built about where the Emmett depot now stands. After the Bannock war was ended peace came again to the Payette valley.

Mr. Womack followed is trade continuously until 14 years ago, when he gave up active labor and hos business was taken over by one of his sons. Blacksmithing was somewhat different then from now. There was no electric power and Mr. Womack usually burned his own coal pits, a slow and tedious undertaking, as they had to be watched day and night to prevent the wood from blazing. he was a successful inventor and secured patents to several of his inventions.

Endured Many Hardships.

Little do the citizens of the present day realize the hardships these sturdy pioneers endured, when the nearest doctor was at Boise and the only was to get him was to ride on horseback: when Kelton, Utah, was the nearest railroad station and everything had to be freighted from that point.

On New Year's day, 1912, Mr. Womack for the last time had his family all together. His faithful wife, who had journeyed with him for 49 years, died in 1914. Theirs was a large family, 15 children, 55 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He left to mourn him 10 children, Isaac and William of Emmett; Ralph of Cascade; George of Seattle; Mrs. G.W. Edwards, Payette; Mrs. F.S. Holdrider, Weiser; Mrs. George Woods, Mesa, and Mrs. J.B. Cox, Mrs. Laura Kelley and Miss Elizabeth Womack of Emmett.

History of Southeast Missouri copyright 1908
pp 860-861

Isaac J. Pirtle. Southeast Missouri is one of the greatest producers of lead in the world, and no man in the region is better known than Isaac J. Pirtle, state mine inspector. His residence is at Fredericktown, Missouri, and his headquarters are at the Bureau of Mines and Mine Inspection, Jefferson City, Missouri, and he and sons are particularly identified with the development of the famous Mine LaMotte, a few miles to the northeast of Fredreicktown, but various members of the Pirtle family for several generations have been strong agents in the general progress of St. Francois county as well.

State Inspector Pirtle was born in St. Francois county, February 2, 1853, and is a son of Isaac N. and Susannah (Wilson) Pirtle. In 1845, when thirty-six years of age, his father came from Indiana to Missouri and located on Castor river, that county, where he continued until his death, in the early nineties, to farm and to work as a blacksmith. He was a firm Republican and an industrious, good-hearted man, and was a most earnest believer in Universalism, which, in his younger days, was subject to much undeserved ridicule. But Isaac N. Pirtle was a man of convictions which could not be shaken by such means, and held to his faith in the midst of all the wickedness of the world, dying in peace and with the confidence that all would be well in the great everlasting future.

A brother Abner Pirtle, also came to St. Francois county at a somewhat later date than Isaac N., prior to the Civil War, and engaged there in farming.

Susannah Wilson (as Mrs. Isaac N. Pirtle was known before her marriage) was born in Kentucky in 1807, and not only proudly claimed the state of Daniel Boone as her own, but also relationship with the great western pioneer, woodsman and hero. Her mother, who died in the eighties, at the of one hundred and two, was a second cousin of Mr, Boone, the family name being the same. Mrs. Susannah Pirtle had two brothers, John and Allen Wilson, who were well known as substantial farmers, solid Republicans and earnest Masons.

Isaac J. Pirtle is the youngest of four sons and six daughters born to his parents, of whom one brother and five sisters are living. It is remarkable that all of the family reaching maturity should have lived to be over sixty years of age, except Isaac J., of this biography, who bids fair to far exceed that span of life. The following facts are adduced as links in the family record, relating to the ten children of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac N. Pirtle: Jane is a widow of a Mr. Cox of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mary Ann (Hale) of Southeast Missouri, is also a widow, with several mature children; Cynthia A. (Warren), whose husband is likewise deceased, resides in Joplin, Missouri; Ellen, who has been twice marrried, is a widow living in Indiana; Hannah T. Gatewood, also a widow, resides in joplin, Missouri; Rebecca died young; Thomas Jefferson, a Union soldier in the Civil War, was killed by guerrillas, and left a wife and four children in St. Francois county; William Henry, a retired farmer of that county, has been thrice married and is now a widower with several children; James M. went to Washington county, Illinois, in 1861, and engaged in farming, married and reared a large family and died at the age of sixty-eight years;

Abner Terril WOMACK and Mary Ann (Polly) PIRTLE had the following children:

i. Susanna Rosella WOMACK, born on November 25, 1865, Missouri; married Lafayette MORRIS, on June 17, 1880, Madison County, MO[4],[5]; died on April 23, 1937, Beulah, Madison County, MO.
ii. Jasper Marion WOMACK, born on May 13, 1867, Illinois; married Florence Eliza Jane MURPHY, on June 10, 1888, Iron County, MO; married Ella Alma HOUSE, on July 31, 1898, Carter County, MO; died on July 8, 1957, Van Buren, Carter County, MO.
iii. Thomas WOMACK was born between 1867 and 1870.

Abner Terril WOMACK and Mary JOHNSON were married about 1872. Mary JOHNSON[6] (daughter of William JOHNSON and Margaret COFFEL) was born on May 14, 1838 in Tennessee. She died on September 10, 1912 in St. Francois County, MO. Mary's surname is listed as White in Lelia's Obituary.

Lelia Ellen Womack, daughter of Abner and Mary White Womack, was born in St. Francois County, Missouri on December 8, 1878. She was united in marriage on February 25, 1902, to George Wilburn Hughes, who with their five children, survive. They are: Jessie (Mrs. Julius) Jensen and Ruth (Mrs. Merl) Pirtle of Arnheim, Calif.; Ted Hughes of Doe Run; James, at home, and Charles Hughes, who is serving with the U.S. Army in Egypt. She also leaves one granddaughter, Beverly Ann Price, other relatives and friends.

Mary's Death Certificate lists William Johnson & Margaret Coffel as her parents. Both being born in Tennessee.

Abner Terril WOMACK and Mary JOHNSON had the following children:

i. Robert Terrell WOMACK, born on May 13, 1872, Mine La Motte, Madison County, MO; married Lucy KIRKPATRICK, on July 4, 1897, St. Francois County, MO; died on October 2, 1928, Flat River, St. Francois County, MO.

A Wind Storm

On Friday, Nov. 6, a hurricane, tornado, cyclone, whirlwind, or whatever those uproareous winds are called - the kind that knock some things down and lift others up -- passed in the vicinity of Mine LaMotte doing more or less damage. It struck the place of widow Laborat in the flatwoods, and did considerable business, considering the time it was at it. Next, it turned it's attention to the farm of 'Squire R. Womack. Here the wind, with but few preliminaries, invited the 'Squire's rails, boards, planks, cave-spouts, and everything movable-about the place to take a pleasure excursion in the atmosphere, to which they readily assented, followed by the smoke-house, hen-house, well-house, and many other things not in the habit of taking sprees. Even the substantial dwelling was moved slightly on its foundation, interfering somewhat with the pleasures of a party of relatives and friends who were taking dinner at Mr. Womack's on the occasion of the marriage of his son, Levi Womack.

From there, the storm cut an ugly figure through the timber some four miles to the place of J. W. Nations on Coldwater. Here it filled the roar full of trees for a quarter of a mile, laid down a line on fence, crossed the creek, and cleared off a hillside within 200 yards of Nations' mill. From there it went -- no where, we hope.

GENEALOGICAL, BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL FACTS AND SKETCHES OF THE WRITERS FAMILY
By F. M. Womack

Uncle William Womack (Buck) married a McBee, he moved to Missouri about 1846 or 1847 from Jackson County, Ala. Stopped over with father on his way remained 2 weeks - had a daughter, Cousin Betty who fell from the wagon as they came [across] the Cumberland Mountain. A wheel ran over her leg and broke it, therefore they rested at fathers two weeks on account of her misfortune. Uncle Buck had a large family of children - seemed to be nice family of children. I think the majority of the boys and girls played the fiddle they had two fiddles, some would play and some would dance they seemed to be an intelligent family of children. Uncle Buck was moving through in wagons drawn by oxen. He died in the State of Mo. Some of his family was living in Ozark Co. Mo. a few years ago.

William Womack received a land patent of approximately 79 acres in 1831 in Jackson County, AL.

1840 U.S. Census, Jackson County, AL. The U.S. Census for 1840 does not list each individual, only the head of each household. William is listed as William Warmack with 2 males under 5 (William, Levi), 1 male between age 5 and 10 (Abner), 1 male between age 10 and 15 (Robert), 1 male between age 15 and 20 (Asa), 1 male between age 40 and 50 (William), 2 females between age 5 and 10 (Elizabeth, Mary Ann), 1 female between 10 and 15 (Nancy), 1 female age 20 and 30 (Lucy), 1 female betweeb age 40 and 50 (Sarah). Also on this page is son-in-law John McDowell, married Martha, and Josiah T. Womack, possible nephew, son of William’s proable brother Josiah.

I have not been able to locate William Womack in 1860 U.S. Census, I believe that he was living in Perry County, MO, but the census taker skipped him during the enumeration.

William Womack patented 156 acres in Perry County, MO in 1859.
